Orange Peel’s Pocket

Orange Peel’s Pocket

One day in class, Orange Peel—who got her nickname by eating orange peels when she was little—and her classmates learn about China. Everyone starts to ask Orange Peel questions about the country because they know that’s where she was born. But she doesn’t have all the answers. So Orange Peel joins her mother on her neighborhood errands to find out. Many of the shops they visit are owned by people who also were born in China. Each has a story to tell Orange Peel. She visits Mr. Fan the tailor, who speaks about silk; Ma Sang, who owns an antiques store and also writes poetry; Mrs. Liu at the flower shop; Mr. Yu, whose restaurant makes “best there ever was” noodle soup; and Jasmine at the ice cream shop. Orange Peel can’t wait to tell the kids at school about China’s influence on all of these things, but first she discovers a number of gifts that have been slipped into her pocket by the store owners: silk, a poem, a peony, a noodle soup recipe, and a lucky red knot. Orange Peel is overjoyed, as the treasures she’s found link her to the place where she was born.Rose Lewis’s text is a wonderful look into China’s influence on history and the modern world. Free Tuesdays at the Pink Palace Museum
Event on 2012-05-22 13:00:00
From the blooming trees and sprouting flowers, it’s apparent spring is upon us in the Mid-South. With the budding season comes Spring Break and its long days with little to do. Year round, both the Pink Palace Museum and Lichterman Nature Center offer free admissions after 1pm Tuesdays. During the month of March we invite you to check out our new programming on your Spring Break Tuesday afternoons.

Our New Connections: Historic Black Memphis exhibit is now open, and features artifacts spanning the history of African-American culture in Memphis. With pieces dating as far back as the first decades of our river city, this exhibit examines the roles African Americans played in the evolution of our community.

Saturday March 12, George Washington Carver* opens. This traveling exhibit brings to life the groundbreaking work done by Dr. Carver during his career as an educator, innovator and agricultural game-changer.

Memphis is aglow with vibrant botanicals in the spring, and a visit to Lichterman Nature Center this time of year is a special treat. With acres of native plant species, glimpses of native animals, miles of trails and boardwalks, and a beautiful natural lake, visitors can commune with nature without leaving the city limits.

Enjoy March and Spring Break at the Pink Palace Museum and at Lichterman Nature Center. And do it for free, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 5pm at the Pink Palace and 1 to 4pm at Lichterman.
