Buy Flower Bulbs

There are two main schools of thoughts about buying flowers. Number 1 is buy them to get out of trouble. Number 2 is buy them before you get in trouble.

Well I believe in number 3. Buy them randomly, leave them around the house and don’t mention who they’re for or from. It is the much more fun than the traditional options.

These are the first shots I’ve posted from the new Sigma 30mm lens. I love that 1.4 goodness.

The Rose Garden at Lyndale Park are the second oldest rose gardens in the United States, completed in 1908 (the oldest rose garden in Connecticut was also designed by Theodore Wirth). The garden features over 60,000 blossoms during peak season and over 100 varieties of roses. The most important decorative element is the Heffelfinger fountain which was brought from the Villa Montalto in Florence, Italy in 1944.

“Life is a mosaic of pleasure and pain – grief is an interval between two moments of joy. Peace is the interlude between two wars. You have no rose without a thorn; the diligent picker will avoid the pricks and gather the flower. There is no bee without the sting; cleverness consists in gathering the honey nevertheless.”

Zing-ias, Spring Flowers – Brilliant purple flowers seen in the bright morning light of Arizona, singing out with pizzazz against the light green leaves, buds and stems. Rick and Sally’s home in Phoenix.

Make sure to see the next image in my stream for the surprising "after flower" from this pretty plant. There is a hint of what is to come when they fade at the center bottom of this image.

Flower Setup
Flowers

Strobist Information:

I couldn’t help noticing that Flickr is desperately short of flower pictures so I figured that it was my duty as a contributor to this fine photographic resource to add a couple more! LOL

The flowers in question were all purchased from the Brisbane Sunday flower market and the pictures will eventually be incorporated into Keoula’s spring dress collection. In the meantime, they are making a guest appearance in the nickwheeleroz 08 Flickr photo collection. :)

I tried a variety of backgrounds, but the ‘brief’ was to shoot them on white which I mostly stuck too. I used a couple of the tile boards from my white background trials to shoot against. I placed my large DIY softbox as the main light and used a second diffused SB-28 to light the flowers from below. I placed a third Sunpak 383 pointing towards the back tile board to give the white background.

All the pictures were taken with a variation on this setup. The blue background in the second yellow flower picture was created by turning the background light off so the white went to grey and then setting the white balance to tungsten in Lightroom.

The yellow flowers were also in a bit of a sorry state so there was quite a lot of touching up in Paint Shop Pro as well as the cloning of the odd petal here and there to fill in a few gaps! :)

As an aside, if anyone knows what the purple or yellow flowers are called, please do drop a note in the comments. It would be good to give the pictures a better title than ‘yellow flower’! :) The purple flowers also had pink and yellow variations in the bunch and the petals felt like paper.

Update: Thank you to everyone for identifying the gerbera’s and statis, I have updated the titles and tags accordingly.

Tulip Era in the Ottoman Empire…
Tulips

The Tulip Era from 1718 to 1730 was a relatively peaceful period in which the Ottoman Empire oriented itself more towards Europe. The name of the period derives from the fact that was a tulip craze. Tulips were widely purchased by the nobility and came to represent the fashion of the era. Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Pasha was the Grand Vizier of the Empire. The end of the "Tulip Period" was marked by an uprising led by Patrona Halil in 1730.
The artifacts of culture and the arts throughout the empire had seen a sharp increase. Capital had new housing projects, especially the establishment of yalis in the Bosporus. Artistic expression became associated with the capital with new captial sponsorship for artisans. This appreciation for artistic achievements extended to other areas of culture like science and academic studies.
